‘WILLBERRY THE WONDER PONY’ COMES TO ADELAIDE
17 November 2017
‘Willberry the Wonder Pony’ is a very familiar face in Eventing across the globe. World renowned eventing riders including Michael Jung, Pippa Funnell, Mark Todd, and our own Shane Rose, have taken their Willberry pony cross country at major competitions in the UK.
Willberry is a toy pony that represents a UK charity set up following the cancer diagnosis of young British rider, Hannah Francis. ‘Wilberry’ was always by Hannah’s side, and she blogged about her cancer journey through the eyes of her toy pony ‘Willberry’. Unfortunately, Hannah lost her battle with the disease in August 2016.
When Hannah’s Wilberry Wonderpony Charity learnt about Gillian Rolton’s battle with endometrial cancer, it seemed an obvious choice to partner with the Mitsubishi Motors Australian International Three Day Event and Cancer Council SA, to raise the profile of cancer research.
“Gill has been overwhelmed by the support of the public and the riders to help promote and support her chosen charities and raise the profile of endometrial cancer and the research required to find a cure,” says Greg Rolton.
As a way to raise awareness and support fundraising for cancer research, riders have been asked to create interesting ways to parade their respective Willberry Ponies during the event.
To date, ‘Wilberry’ has had several adventures including parading with Megan Jones as her trot up partner during the horse presentations last Wednesday. ‘Willberry’ is also ‘shadow judging’ the dressage with President of the Ground Jury, Christian Landolt, and has ‘popped up’ in the main arena as Matt Gaske took off his top hat at the end of his dressage test on Thursday.
Other Cancer Council activities across the event include the Sun Smart program on Qantas Cross Country Day, where spectators will be provided with Cancer Council Sun Cream for a gold coin donation. Thomas Foods International Showjumping Day will see Cancer Council volunteers armed with yellow daffodil badges at the event entrances.
All funds raised during the event will go towards the treatment and research of Endometrial Cancer.
If you would like to join riders and event-goers alike in making a donation, please head to the Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event website at http://australian3de.com.au/ and click the donation link on the home page.
All donations to Cancer Council SA are tax deductible and greatly appreciated.
