Aussies bring home a Bronze

Aussies bring home a Bronze

Australia took home a bronze medal in the eventing team competition after a dramatic finish that went down to the final rider at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Aussies led the team competition after the cross-country leg, but with the elimination of Shane Rose, the team had to count all three rounds in the jumping final. Stuart Tinney had 17 penalties on Pluto Mio, which put Australia out of first place. Sam Griffiths then went clear on his horse Paulank Brockagh to put Australia back in the race for gold. It set up a frantic finish, where a clear round from German world number one Michael Jung put his team in the gold medal position, only for France to take over with a clear from Nicolas Astier on Piaf de b’Neville. The final competitor Chris Burton – who had led the individual competition after the cross-country – had a chance to give Australia the gold with a clear round. He had two rails down, however, leaving his team in the bronze medal position and securing the Olympic title for France. Burton finished fifth and compatriot Griffiths was fourth in the individual jumping final. Burton said while the team was happy to take bronze behind France and Germany, he could not help thinking about what might have been. “Look there’s always a lot of pressure when you jump in three day eventing in reverse order in pole position, but I was happy with the way everything went,” he said. “The horse has really exceeded our expectations this week but of course it’s disappointing to have two down. Burton said the...

Aus3DE Event Director inducted into EA Hall of Fame with 1992 Eventing Team

Equestrian Australia is pleased to announce that the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games Eventing Team of Matthew Ryan, Andrew Hoy,  David Green and Aus3DE’s Event Director Gillian Rolton will be inducted into the EA Hall of Fame in the team’s category. Inductees will be celebrated at the annual Sport Achievement Awards night on Friday 5 June in Melbourne. Congratulations to the 1992 Eventing Team: The Australian Eventing team won team gold in the three day equestrian event at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 having overcome a series of setbacks. The team was made up of Andrew Hoy on Kiwi, Matthew Ryan on Kibah Tic Toc, David Green on Duncan, Gillian Rolton on Peppermint Grove and coached by Wayne Roycroft. Leading into the competition the team was already depleted by injury and illness and was reduced to the minimum three members when David Green’s horse Duncan was ruled unfit after the second day. The surviving trio, Matthew Ryan, Andrew Hoy and Gillian Rolton were placed second entering the show jumping phase behind the New Zealand team who had a strong lead. After a disastrous round by one of the New Zealand riders it all came down to Matthew Ryan and Kibah Tic Toc to secure the Gold medal for the team. Despite the pressure the pair cleared all but the last fence to claim victory for the Australians. Ryan also took home the individual Gold medal and Rolton became the first Australian female to win a medal at an Olympic Games in equestrian. Now in its fourth year, the Equestrian Australia Hall of Fame pays tribute to the heroes of equestrian...
