22 year old Manson takes lead at Adelaide CCI4*

22 year old Jessica Manson has taken the lead in the second leg of the 2014/15 FEI Classics series – the Australian International CCI4* – following a strong performance on Qantas Cross Country Day at Adelaide East Parklands. The West Australian and her Australian stock horse x thoroughbred Legal Star were the closest combination to the optimum time of 11 minutes and 24 seconds, adding just 2.8 time penalties to their dressage score to end the second day on 64.60. Manson and Legal Star have competed in the Adelaide CCI4* twice before and the pair showed their experience around the challenging Adelaide Parklands course. “I’m extremely happy with him (Legal Star). He really couldn’t have done anything more,” said Manson. “He is very quick and nimble and an easy ride, so it was quite easy for me to make time today,” claimed Jess. “He is a pretty good jumper so as long as we are both on the ball tomorrow I am sure we can do it.” Although West Australian Sonja Johnson sadly had to withdraw from the CCI4* her legacy is being represented by her protégé Jess Manson. “I had Sonja on the phone very quickly, she rang me straight up after my run and she was very happy,” said Jess. Johnson and Manson are a fitting match considering Jess’s horse Legal Star shares the same birthplace as Beijing Olympian and all round eventing legend Ringwould Jaguar. Despite slipping into second position, leader after the dressage, Olympian and South Australian Megan Jones still remains in the hunt for her second Adelaide CCI4* title. While the weather was favourable for...

Jones early leader in FEI Classics Australian International CCI4*

Large crowds and cooler conditions were both welcomed to Victoria Park on Friday at the Australian International Three Day Event which marked the beginning of the Adelaide CCI4* which is the second leg of the 2014/15 FEI Classics series. Olympic silver medallist and South Australian Megan Jones and her horse Kirby Park Allofasudden are the early leaders, the pair proving their class in front of a packed Adelaide City Council Heritage Grandstand. Allofasudden is the horse which travelled with Jones to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, but was withdrawn from the Australian team due to a minor foot injury. The duo’s impressive comeback to major competition scored 51.50 which gives them a 5.3 penalty advantage leading into Qantas cross country day. “(This time) last year his foot still wasn’t quite right. We have had a long slow preparation and it’s helped so much on the flat. It’s really taken a long time and lots of schooling,” said an elated Jones. The atmosphere surrounding the dressage arena unsettled a few combinations and second placed combination and CCI4* debutant Belinda Isbister said, “it’s hard to prepare for an atmosphere like this, I know after today a lot of West Australians will be looking for a rent-a-crowd to practise with.” Isbister is having a fairy-tale run as she is currently holding second place on 56.80 penalties. Isbister also has a vocal and strong contingent of supporters. “They are pretty amazing, one of my friends has even made cheer squad shirts. Everybody from WA gets behind Adelaide. We love it.” Rounding out the top three in the CCI4* on a score of...
Australian International Three Day Event heats up

Australian International Three Day Event heats up

A green oasis contrasted against hot and dry conditions greeted competitors on the opening day of competition at the 2014 Australian International Horse Trials staged at Adelaide’s iconic Victoria Park. Day one action saw the first riders in the Horseland CCI2* take to the arena and at the conclusion of day one it is NSW combination Christine Bates and Kung Fu Panda GP currently sitting in the lead with a tidy score of 47.50. The first rider out for the day was South Australian Olympian Megan Jones on the horse Kirby Park Grand Impressions, one of four horses she will ride at this year’s event.  Upon reflection of her test Jones said, “It was actually really good, but I didn’t quite get the score I was after. He has come a long way from where he started and I was really pleased with him.” It looked very unlikely that Jones and her second ride in the CCI2* – Kirby Park Invader would be up in the ranks after the young horse took an extreme disliking to the main arena screen. But together they pulled off a test to see them finish day one in second position with a score of 48.50. Queensland’s Eleanor Osborne and Highborne Rocker are currently in third with a score of 49.40. Jones has three horses in the Horseland CCI2* and is riding her prized Kirby Park Allofasudden in the CCI4*, the horse which she took to the London 2012 Olympic Games but had to withdraw at the eleventh hour due to a minor injury. “I am so excited to have him here and he...
