AUS3DE UNVEILS NEW ARENA NAME TO HONOUR THE LATE GILLIAN ROLTON

Media Release

EMABARGOED UNTIL 12PM WED. OCTOBER 30 2019

The Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event (MMAus3de) pays tribute to the late Gillian Rolton by renaming the Main Arena in her honour.

The MMAus3de will unveil the Gillian Rolton Arena at a special media event in Victoria Park – home to the annual event – on Wednesday October 30.

MMAus3de Chairman and Mrs Rolton’s husband, Greg Rolton, was proud of the arena renaming and said his late wife would have been touched.

“Gillian spent most of her life enjoying this wonderful sport, loving every minute she had in this arena alongside her horses,” Mr Rolton said.

“She would have been honoured to have this arena which is the centre of our event named after her.  I am so grateful to be standing here today paying tribute to her, her contribution to the sport of eventing and her equestrian career.”

Mrs Rolton passed away in 2017 at age 61 after losing her battle with cancer.

Considered one of Australia’s Equestrian champions, having won two Olympic gold medals.  Mrs Rolton was made a member of the Order of Australia posthumously in 2018 for “for significant service to horse sports through roles with a range of national and international equestrian organisations.

This recognition follows on from Gillian being awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the 1993 Australia Day Honours, as well as being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2000 and the South Australian Sport Hall of Fame in 2010 where she was elevated to legend status alongside Sir Donald Bradman.

In 2016, Mrs Rolton was also inducted into the Equestrian Australia Hall of Fame for her service to the sport and a year later was granted the keys to her home city of Adelaide.

The Gillian Rolton Arena is the venue for all the competition action, including Dressage and Showjumping – equestrian’s favourite events.

The 2019 MMAus3de event will be a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, attracting horses and riders from across the Southern Hemisphere who will compete for their places on the Australian team.

The MMAus3de event features three phases of Dressage, Cross Country and Showjumping on the same horse. It is the only CCI five-star event in Australia, only event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and one of only six held throughout the world. This year’s event will also have the biggest prize pool in the Southern Hemisphere with more than $150,000 on the table.

“It’s going to be a great weekend in Adelaide, with the Adelaide parklands coming alive for this amazing event,” Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment David Ridgway MLC said.

“The Australian International 3 Day Event has always been known as a fun, well organised event that both the spectators and competitors love coming to, particularly because you can get so close to the action.

“Adding to the hype this year is that there are two Olympic qualifier events for both dressage and jumping so we know the action is going to be intense.”

Mr Rolton encouraged residents from across the nation to come and experience what the MMAus3de has to offer.

“Some of the best riders and horses in the Southern Hemisphere will descend on Adelaide in the coming weeks, it will be a show not to be missed,” Mr Rolton said.

“And with this year being an Olympic qualifier, we expect it to be bigger and better than ever so make sure to join us for a great day out.”

Mitsubishi Motors Australia will again be the Major Sponsor and Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO John Signoriello said the company can help inspire young equestrians and support our top equestrians as they prepare to represent Australia at the Olympics.

“We share their passion and commitment to hard work and excellence and look forward to finding out who will go on to represent their country at the Olympics, and this is why this sponsorship has been so successful” Mr Signoriello said.

“Many attendees will be very familiar with our vehicles and we will again have our Pajero, Pajero Sport and Triton on display, however, this year we plan to bring our new, best-selling ASX to display at the event, demonstrating that our SUV range has the power and room attendees need to pack life in” said Signoriello.

About MMAus3de

The Adelaide International Horse Trials were born in 1997 to replace the Gawler Horse Trials that had been staged at Gawler, north of Adelaide, since 1954. The new event debuted in Adelaide’s East Parklands with a three-star rating but was subsequently upgraded to a four-star rating in 2002 to become the only event of this calibre in the Southern Hemisphere.

The competition was relaunched and renamed the Australian International 3 Day Event (MMAus3de) in 2007 to celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary and better reflect the international focus of the competition. In 2017 the event was renamed the Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event to reflect the fantastic sponsorship from Mitsubishi Motors.

In 2019, the MMAus3de was upgrade to five-star status, along with the other five international greats, in line with the updated FEI category designations.  The MMAus3de is owned, managed and marketed by the Not for Profit Board of Adelaide Horse Trials Management Inc. comprising equestrian greats, professional business directors and media advisers.
